Autism Awareness Day

Scoil Phroinsiais Naofa Clara celebrate Autism Awareness Day

Last Thursday 29th April proved be a very eventful day at Scoil Phroinsiais Naofa ,Clara when they celebrated the Laois Offaly Families for Autism (LOFFA) Autism Awareness Day. Scoil Phroinsiais Naofa is privileged to have three special Autism classes called “Suaimhneas”.

Organised and coordinated by Suaimhneas staff and in particular by teacher Laura Geoghegan and Special Needs Assistants Grainne Waters and Kelly McCann, the autism awareness day proved to be a major success with a variety of activities taking place throughout the school. Each student was invited to design and wear a colourful hat to school. A tea party took place in each class and children across the school learned the song “I get by with a little help with my friends”. Students also designed their own jigsaw poster piece, as a jigsaw piece is symbol of Autism and also to show unity throughout the school. In addition, an aerial photo of children spelling “Autism Day” was taken using a drone. All classes in the school took part and Ms McGuinn’s senior infants judged to be the overall winners.

In total the day was a major success with €350 being raised for LOFFA, while also raising awareness and understanding of autism in the school community.
