2011 Sports Review

The 2011/2012 school year marked another successful year on the sporting front for the boys from St. Francis N.S., Clara. The school wishes to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, teachers, coaches – in particular Mel, Jimmy and Alan for their continued support of sport in the school.  Special thanks are due to Clara G.A.A. for use of their facilities and continued support.

North Offaly Indoor Hurling Blitz

St. Francis N.S. shared the 2012 indoor hurling cup with Ballinamere N.S.

The year began with a trip to St. Mary’s Hall in Tullamore for the annual north Offaly Primary schools indoor blitz. After the group stages Clara qualified to reach the final against old rivals Ballinamere.  Ballinamere started well however and at half time lead by five goals to three goals. After great words of encouragement from their mentors Jimmy Hughes and Mel Doyle, the Clara boys regrouped and played outstanding hurling in the second half to draw the match seven goals each. With the teams now in deadlock , extra time was required and it looked like the cup was coming back to Clara for the fourth year in a row, when Clara took the lead in the dying seconds courtesy of a powerful shot.  However with the last puck of the game, Ballinamere drew level again. It appeared that penalties or the golden goal would now be necessary to decide the winner. However, in the end, Alan Mulhall , Offaly coaching and development Officer and organiser of competition decided both teams should share the cup. He then presented Clara’s captain and Ballinamere’s captain with the North Offaly Indoor hurling cup.

Offaly Primary School County Ground Hurling Final

Having shared the North Offaly indoor hurling title in February , Clara boys school now qualified to  take part in the Offaly Primary Schools ground hurling final in Ferbane to face Birr , the south Offaly champions and Ballinamere . The Clara boys recorded victories over Birr and met Ballinamere in the final once again. Another pulsating battle ensured and this time Ballinamere emerged victorious. Congratulations however to the boys on reaching the County Final.

It was a miserable and wet day of Friday 9th March when the boys from 4th and 5th class travelled to take part in the Offaly Primary Schools Astro Turf Gaelic Football Blitz at Leah Victoria Park Tullamore. The journey was not in vain however as the school won its first Gaelic football cup for many years.Hopefully more silverwear will follow for this team as most of the team will be underage again next year.  Well done boys – keep up the good work.
